Division of Rasmussen Companies: Rasmussen Excavation
Employment Type: Full-time
Schedule: Day shift, Monday – Friday (possible overtime and possible on-call during weekends in emergent/special circumstances)

Location: Hamilton, NY area - Jobs locations vary to multiple hours away, to local/less than an hour away
Pay: $22 - $24 an hour (ENTRY LEVEL) $25 - $28 an hour (5+ years operator exp.) – pay based on candidate’s experience
***Candidate could see an increase in pay (possibly outside this range depending on experience) if they also have a CDL A or B, although having a CDL it is not required .

For over 50 years, the Excavation division has proudly completed various projects from small construction to large residential, commercial projects, including solar across New York State. With our home office located in Hamilton, NY, we also have four (4) Rental stores, three located in Central New York State and the Southern Tier, and one (1) location in Salisbury, NC.

Job Description

Rasmussen Excavation is seeking one (1) dependable and experienced Heavy Equipment Operators & Laborers. This position requires experience operating heavy equipment ranging from skid steers and dozers to excavators of all sizes in a skilled manner. This position also requires performing labor that all jobs require. All our employees are team players that understand no one is above working in the trenches. Due to the nature of our work, there is also an opportunity to make prevailing wage. Every year the location of our jobs change; sometimes a majority are local to home, other times they are across NY state. Due to this, some will require travel, whether for one night in a hotel or the whole week (paid for by the company), for which we provide additional compensation. This position requires flexibility and understanding that it may/will require the candidate to travel a majority of the time. The essential duties of this position are as follows:

  • Operate various equipment in a skilled manner, in varying conditions, adjusting controls as necessary, including:

- Excavators, dozers, skid steers, etc., for digging, backfilling, and grading.

- Candidates will be asked to show this experience for our team by operating one or more of our machines at one of our locations, prior to being made a part of the team.

  • Candidate can expect to be on the same job for a full work week. The following could be the same on a different job.
  • Follow project plans and instructions from supervisors.
  • Work independently/alone and at times lead an employee or two.
  • Perform manual labor
  • Complete tasks in a timely manner, conducive to the job timeline requirements.
  • Working with or alongside other subcontractors that may be on-site.
  • Ensure the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment.
  • Conduct pre-job inspections, perform routine maintenance of equipment, ensuring all are cleaned and stored properly at the end of each work day.
  • Comply to all OSHA standards and safety regulations related to construction sites at all time.
  • Adhere to company policies and standards.

Required Experience/Knowledge

  • Minimum 5+ years of proven experience as a heavy equipment operator.
  • Proficiency in operating heavy equipment.
  • Ability to read plans, establish grade.
  • Knowledge of construction processes, techniques and best practices.
  • OSHA 10-hour certificate and ability to produce proof.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and physical dexterity.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Experience/Knowledge

  • Experience specifically operating CAT heavy equipment.
  • Tilt-rotator experience, a plus but not required
  • CDL License, A or B, a plus, but not required.
  • CPR First Aid
  • Trimble GPS experience is preferred, but not required

General Requirements

  • Minimum 21 years of age.
  • Authorized to work in the United States and able to provide proof. (We are unable to provide sponsorship of any kind at this time.)
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid NYS Driver's License – clean and safe driving record required - must be eligible to drive Company Vehicles safely.
  • Must be a team player.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Willing to work outdoors, and occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
  • Mandatory use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety vest, gloves and steel-toe boots.
  • Exposure to moderate to high noise levels.
  • Ability to safely mount and dismount heavy equipment.
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50-80 pounds.
  • Physical demands of this position require standing, walking, twisting, bending, crouching, squatting, kneeling, reaching, climbing, crawling.

**Starting wage will be based on experience.
