This is an exciting opportunity for you to join passionate professionals providing world class support to our millions of customers and qualifications around the world.

We are Cambridge University Press & Assessment, a world-leading academic publisher and assessment organisation and a proud part of the University of Cambridge.

About the role

Are you interested in a career in academic publishing but need an opportunity to gain insight and experience in a publishing workplace? This entry-level intern role is designed to offer just that. The Academic Publishing team at Cambridge University Press & Assessment is recruiting for an Editorial Books, Sales and Marketing Intern. You will be working directly with our friendly and collaborative Higher Education (HE) team within Academic Publishing. The HE team is responsible for the publication of monographs and textbooks within the higher education market. Along the way, you will develop an excellent understanding of where Sales, Marketing, Books Editorial and Textbook Development sit within the publishing ecosystem and obtain the essential skills required for a career in publishing academic books or textbooks. Our team works diligently to ensure that our products are suited for the ever- changing environment of academia, and that we keep at the forefront the needs of students and instructors alike. Your insight having recently been in the university setting will help guide our goals in the HE team and we look forward to learning from your experiences as well.

As part of this role, you will:

  • Undergo training in academic publishing roles and apply that training to real projects.
  • Assist with the research to identify schools, courses and faculty where the book might be used.
  • Assist with the research and development of sales tools
  • Assist with market development work
  • Enter data in Salesforce—the Customer Relationship Management System—including contact information and opportunity information.
  • Support commissioningeditors, development editors, and editorial assistants with routine administrative tasks and communication with authors and internal colleagues.
  • Learn about standout content, effective pedagogy, and best-fit e-learning tools and software.

You may also:

  • Help to create or edit resources for authors, colleagues, and readers/students.
  • Assist development editors with their textbook titles, including drafting development assessments and analysis of review data.
  • Edit and write copy about titles for marketing purposes.
  • Assist members of the Working Group for equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging in their work to promote these commitments in our academic titles.
  • Assist with sales visits to nearby campuses to help promote our textbooks to potential adopters.

About you

You will be a proactive and detail-oriented individual with a keen interest in market research, editorial processes, and textbook development. You do not need previous sales or editorial experience or a degree pertaining to either, but you should be able to demonstrate interest in academic publishing and have administrative skills, strong written and oral communication skills, and an interest in how people learn. You should be at least one year away from completing a higher education degree by the date the internship begins, as this is a role within the higher education team and the internship is designed for people who would be in a position to apply to editorial roles in the near future. Those who have completed their degree are also encouraged to apply. We welcome applications from individuals who would contribute new perspectives and ideas and those who have lived experience of using accessibility tools.

To be successful in this role, the following skills, values and behaviours are desirable:

  • An outstanding level of written English and clear communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Adaptability; willingness to work both independently and collaboratively within a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent time management and administrative skills – the ability to handle multiple tasks and projects.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • A value for pedagogy and making learning environments accessible and inclusive
  • An interest in sales and marketing in a higher education context
  • Initiative to contribute new insights and ideas from your own studies, background, and experience.

Applying for our internship is simple, and we're here to support you every step of the way!

As this is an entry-level role where previous experience in editorial or sales/marketing is not necessary, the cover letter is important. Use it to tell us why you want this opportunity and why you're interested in publishing. We do read every cover letter, and we won't be using an AI tool to shortlist, so while we like to see your CV it is not as important as communicating who you are and why you want to be our intern.
