Please note - This is a temporary, full-time, benefited position with an anticipated duration of 18 months This temporary position is intended to meet an immediate need for an attorney and while assignments will be dependent on experience, it is likely the position will focus on contract review and compliance, policy updates, and other priority projects.

SUMMARY:

Under general direction, assists with the provision of professional legal advice, representation, and legal services to the Routt County Board of County Commissioners (BCC) and other departments as approved by the BCC; assists in reviewing, interpreting, recommending, and drafting countywide and department contracts, agreements, policies and various legal documents in compliance with federal, state and local laws, ordinances, codes and regulations; assists in representing the county's interests in connection with litigation, administrative proceedings, settlement discussions, and other legal proceedings; and performs other related duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES:

The duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific duties does not prevent the assignment of work that is appropriately related to this class.

-Provides professional legal advice and support to the BCC and, with their approval, the County Manager and department heads, regarding the compliance of county programs and operations with applicable laws, regulations, orders, and other legal requirements.

-Represents the county's interests in various litigation matters; evaluates claims, appeals and legal actions taken against the county; notifies insurers and monitors the status of claims handled by insurers and other outside counsel; prepares pleadings and exhibits; conducts discoveries, prepares witnesses and presents cases in court and/or administrative proceedings; drafts appellate briefs; communicates with opposing parties and the court.

-Reviews and monitors new case law, statutes, and regulations having a possible application to the county; conducts legal research.

-Prepares legal briefs, reports, records, and correspondence, including BCC transmittals and resolutions; makes presentations to groups and individuals; reviews, interprets, recommends, and prepares policies, procedures, leases and contracts, and other documents.

-Attends meetings and hearings of the BCC, as well as those of other county boards, committees and commissions as required; provides information and responds to questions.

-Communicates with officials of federal, state, and local agencies as well as public and private entities regarding matters of compliance and/or mutual interest.

-Develops and maintains cooperative and collaborative working relationships with federal, state and county officials, other counties, community groups, and the public; attends meetings, conferences, and training; supports and/or serves on boards, commissions, committees, teams and task forces as required.

-Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

Education:

Possession of a juris doctor degree from an accredited law school.

Experience:

Two to five years of progressively responsible experience as a licensed attorney. Courtroom trial experience is preferred.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

-A valid license to drive a vehicle in Colorado and a safe driving record may be required at the time of appointment and throughout employment.

-Membership in good standing in the Colorado State Bar.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

-Must pass a fingerprint based criminal background check prior to appointment.
