Position Description:

The Library Assistant I has a primary responsibility to provide library services to patrons at the Health Sciences Kornhauser Library public service desk. The assistant will interact directly with patrons and aid in accessing research databases and online information tools. This position will also manage inquiries at the public service desk via email and telephone, issue library cards, instruct in-person patrons in the use of computers, scanners, and photocopiers, and ensure library equipment is in proper working order. This position also has the responsibility to keep accurate patron records, train and assist 6 to 8 student assistants and provide interlibrary loan services. This position will work Tuesday through Friday from 10am – 6pm, rotating Saturdays 9:45am – 6pm, and may require working occasional late evenings.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Administer departmental services, which includes but is not limited to: interpret library policies when receiving and responding to patron questions and concerns, direct patrons to appropriate information sources, and makes decisions regarding borrower eligibility.
  • Communicate with other libraries via phone and email regarding bibliographic, shipping, and other problems with interlibrary loan requests and materials.
  • Process interlibrary loan borrowing and lending requests received via OCLC, ILLiad, and other resource sharing systems.
  • Assist in maintaining library patron address records.
  • Collaborate with the Student Supervisor to provide guidance and direction to student personnel in the absence of the supervisor to ensure proper desk coverage.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of college study in liberal arts, business, computer/information science or related field.
  • Experience using Illiad or other bibliographic management or resource sharing systems, WorldShare Management System (WMS), and/or PubMed.

Target Compensation $16.93/hour

Compensation Will Be Commensurate To Candidate Experience.
