Job Description
Duties will include, but are not limited to the following:
- Provide consultative care to hospital inpatients requiring hematology or oncology consultation.
- Provide care to new consults and return patients in the outpatient clinic setting.
- Oversee the chemotherapy infusion room and administration of systemic cancer therapy.
- Document patient care data in VA electronic medical records system, Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS), including consult notes, daily progress notes for inpatients, encounters for outpatients.
- Responsible for appropriate documentation of initial visit, follow-up visits, procedures performed, problem lists, procedure lists, and making interim summaries. He/she must be computer literate
- Provides ongoing care for assigned patients.
- Ability to perform initial histories and physical examinations on outpatients with hematology problems; make assessments and use appropriate diagnostic evaluations; and implement timely and appropriate treatment.
- Orders diagnostic studies and interprets laboratory tests, EKG, and radiology diagnostic tests (CXR, CT Scan, MRl).
- Prescribes and refills medications within the defined scope of practice.
- Perform bone marrow biopsies on patients where this procedure is appropriate, review peripheral blood smears if indicated
- Complete hematology/oncology e-consults (electronic consults).
- Complies with the rules, regulations and by-laws to include but not limited to, record keeping practices in accordance with this Medical Center and VA.
- Works effectively with patients, families, staff, co-workers and other health care professionals.
- Provides education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and the use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
- The hematology/oncology provider shall cooperate with, and participate in, medical duties or functions related to quality of care and peer review along with improvement/performance improvement activities at the direction of the Chief of Medical Service.
- Participates in Medical Service educational activities.
- Practices within the scope of assigned privileges.
- Meets medical staff criteria for initial appointment and reappraisal.
- Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M.; however, subject to change, depending on the needs of the service/medical center. On call duties may be required.
Contract Buy Out Program: This position may be eligible for the Physician / Provider Contract Buy Out Program (CBOP), which authorizes VHA to buy out service contracts (Locum agreements, loan repayments, sign-on bonus contracts, Physician-owned practices) in exchange for employment at certain rural or highly rural facilities for a period of obligated service (minimum 4 years).
